Introduction
Today I’m bringing you some proper lifestyle foodie content from Brixton. I headed down to one of the most famous backyard eateries in the area — Maureen’s Kitchen. This place is legendary for its jerk chicken, oxtail, curry mutton, fried chicken, and the whole backyard cooking experience. The smell alone hits you before you even reach the gate.
I arrived early so I could get behind the scenes before the crowds came in — and trust me, this place gets BUSY.
Arriving at Maureen’s Kitchen
Arriving at Maureen’s Kitchen
Maureen’s Kitchen is tucked away inside a residential property, and that’s part of the charm. You walk through a gate straight into a backyard filled with:
- Smoking jerk drums
- Bubbling pots
- Charcoal grills
- Staff prepping dishes
- The smell of jerk seasoning everywhere
It’s raw, authentic, and exactly what South London food culture is about.
Parking is paid — around £6+ for an hour — so be prepared before you arrive.
Behind the Scenes – The Real Backyard Setup
Because I arrived early, I got full access to the prep area:
- Huge pots bubbling with oil
- Charcoal drums smoking jerk chicken
- Fried chicken being scooped fresh
- Rice & peas steaming
- Plantain frying
- Staff working non‑stop in the heat
This isn’t a small operation — it’s better than some restaurants. Everything is cooked fresh, in bulk, and with serious flavour.
The Menu & Prices
The Menu & Prices
Maureen’s Kitchen offers a wide range of dishes, and the prices are surprisingly good for the portions.
The best value option (and the one we ordered):
⭐ Five Platter Special – £20
Includes:
- Three meats (curry mutton, jerk chicken, oxtail, fried chicken, etc.)
- Three sides
- Rice & peas
- Plantain
You can also mix and match your platter — mac & cheese, double jerk chicken, oxtail combos, whatever you want.
For £20, the portion size is unreal.
Ordering Our Food
My wife ordered the five‑platter special, and while waiting, I filmed the kitchen action:
- Jerk chicken chopped fresh
- Curry mutton scooped straight from the pot
- Fried chicken placed into trays
- Plantain added on top
- Staff were moving fast as the crowd started arriving
The smell was unbelievable — smoky, sweet, spicy, proper jerk vibes.
Community Events & Notices
Maureen’s Kitchen also promotes local events:
- Celebrity Rollout – Old School Edition
- Seaside Trip to Clacton-on-Sea
- Soul’s Brunch – Wristbands Available
- Barrel shipping to Jamaica (£40 for two, £50 for one)
It’s more than a food spot — it’s a community hub.
The Food Reveal
Before leaving, we opened one of the platters:
- Curry mutton
- Jerk chicken
- Oxtail
- Plantain
- Rice & peas
- Coleslaw
The portion was massive. The curry mutton was soft like butter — I tried a piece on camera and nearly lost my mind. Proper flavour, proper tenderness.
We packed everything up to take home to Northwest London, but even tasting it fresh on-site was incredible.
Final Thoughts
Maureen’s Kitchen is one of Brixton’s true gems. Friendly staff, authentic backyard cooking, huge portions, and real Caribbean flavour. If you’re into jerk chicken, oxtail, curry mutton, or fried chicken — this place is a must‑visit.
Until the next video — catch you guys later from Maureen’s Kitchen.
