I walked past a table at celebrASIA and had no idea what was on it. A stranger stopped and explained the whole thing.

It is congklak in Indonesia, congkak in Malaysia, sungka in the Philippines and bay khom in Cambodia. The family name is mancala, and congklak is Indonesian for cowrie shell, which is what you move round the board. It started around Jordan and Turkey and reached South East Asia along the old trading routes, and it is played as warri in Barbados, oware in Ghana and Ivory Coast and bao in Tanzania, plus Kazakhstan and southern India.

He also runs through the rules on the board itself: two players, an equal number of shells each side, moving round the board and dropping a seed as you go.

All of that from one table at Battersea Power Station. I only know dominoes.
