Up To £104 To Sit With Your Kids: The New UK Family Seating Rules Explained

✈️ You have probably seen the headlines: airlines banned from charging parents to sit next to their children. Some reports made it sound like the ban had already started. It has not, and it will not for a while.

On 2 October 2026 the government announced that airlines will have to seat children under 14 next to a parent or accompanying adult free of charge, grandparents included, and that simple name spelling mistakes on a booking can be corrected for free. Right now a parent and child can be charged up to £104 on a return trip just to sit together, and name corrections can cost as much as £40.

Here is the bit most of the coverage skipped: none of it is in force yet. It needs the Civil Aviation Bill to get Royal Assent. That bill has been through the House of Lords and is now in the Commons, with its next stage later this month, and the government is aiming to have this in place in time for next year's summer holidays.
