Pay Per Mile Tax: How UK Electric Cars Got Here (Checked)

Is the pay per mile tax coming for every driver? No. From April 2028 it only applies to electric cars and plug-in hybrids, and petrol and diesel cars are not included. Here is what the government has actually confirmed, checked on GOV.UK on 17 October 2026.

In this video I go through who pays, what it costs and how your miles are counted. Fully electric cars pay 3p a mile and plug-in hybrids pay 1.5p a mile, on top of normal road tax. On 10,000 miles that is about £300 a year, and the rate rises with inflation from 2029. I also look at how we got here, because I went electric in 2019 when there was a £3,500 grant, road tax was nothing and plenty of chargers were free. Since then the old grant closed, a new smaller one came back in July 2025, electric cars started paying road tax in April 2025, and home electricity VAT is only paused until March. My view: every perk taken away is one less reason to switch.
